mfw when I read this a week ago #undeadunluck
I don't wanna make this thread too long, but all in all, it's always a balancing act of readability and faithfulness. With accents, going "full yee-haw" can work for some characters, of course, but a more nuanced approach I feel always works better. (6/6)
Aioi's 白馬の犯人 or "culprit on a white horse" became "blight in shining armor." As for why, this is based off of 白馬の騎士 (knight on a white horse) or in English: "knight in shining armor." People seemed to like this choice a lot and I thank you all for that. (4/12)
Although semi-retired, @salinsley is probably one of the best around and she's always so ready to help her fellow letterers and spread awareness of what the job entails. I only really got to work with her firsthand on i tell c, but I cherished every moment!
I'm so glad to have met @kyla_aiko through Super Smartphone because I got to see her develop as a letterer on the fly in the manga we've worked on, like Super Smartphone and Gokurakugai. An incredibly kind person, awesome, and always brightens my day.
Undead 72: A little one panel joke that hinged on the furigana: 不運は殺されない (fuun wa korosarenai/Unluck [i.e. "I"] won't be killed [here]) with furi 不死 (不運は不死/fuun wa fushi. Elaborating with a compromise of both readings is essential to get the point across.
I figured I can elaborate a little on this choice for the curious. In the original 事情聴取 had デート as furi. It sort of landed into my lap, so I ran with it instead of going one way or another or making it "interrogation date." #アイテルシー #Itellc #wj10 https://t.co/kWSpi7MS4m
Fuuko was ordering in language very common at ramen shops in Japan (specifically Ramen Jiro shops.) マシマシ means "a lot of~" So she's asking for extra veggies, garlic, fat, spicy, large order, firm noodles, but it had to sound like gibberish, so I made it "diner speech." (3/3)
Me getting this series: "Oh wow kooky old karate man gets reincarnated as a JK! Hahah wacky hijinks are gonna ensue I bet."
Me 5 volumes in: "I now know how to build a brand, organize SEO, finance a dojo and pick the right venue for my combat sports event." https://t.co/8NGMzuHAKU
Kaiju No. 8 Ch 26, For Kikoru's post-attack lines. Just likke 加 (ka) is the linking word for both in JP (kasoku/accelerate and kageki/added attack,) I've tried something similar in EN where "-tion" binds the two together without sacrificing too much meaning. #KaijuNo8
Kaiju No. 8 Ch 27 Just a quick bit of trivia, but this officer's name is Takao (高雄) which is the surname of Saito Takao, the manga-ka behind Golgo 13, hence his appearance and being on sniping duty.
Gokurakugai Ch 7: Alma says 腕が爆弾アイスになる! "my arms are turning into bakudan ice." Bakudan Ice is ice cream in big bulbous rubber tubes that you snip at the tip and suck. You can end up squeezing too hard and it goes everywhere. https://t.co/h0RuElq7tp
