i have been working today with tears in my eyes all day.
tears of unbridled excitement and joy 🥲
You know, I think up one-liners/zingers that go unused all the time. I remember one time in Ch 26 of Kaiju No. 8 I decided not to go with this one bc it was too far off base for my liking.
that being said, "This is a no-fly zone" was another lol.
Also, Fukuzawa Yukichi is the person on the 10,000 yen note if context from the dialogue didn't make that clear. He's an entrepreneur during the Meiji era that was famous for introducing ideas of the West to Japan after the fall of the Tokugawa shogunate.
i tell c Ch 10: The new chief of criminal investigations speaks with a lot of English loan words. (Example: 初舞台 becomes "はつステージ" = "first stage" and 勉強 becomes スタディ) but sometimes even his SFX/drawn aside dialogue is in English. (あんがー = anger)
So yeah a line said by Andy in response to Shen about the Taipei 101 still having its gunpowder sounded funny but I translated it faithfully. At first I thought maybe Andy had his memories scrambled too, but it seems it was a mistake that'll be corrected in the tankobons lol
i tell c 10: Akiraka refers to himself here as 実の課長 (jitsu no kacho/real chief) which is a play on 実の親 (jitsu no oya/real parent/biological parent.) I went with "parent-in-chief" because of that.
you know how it goes, no rest for the wicked.
過労裂伝(クロニクル)~日英翻訳者編~でいいのかなこのシリーズ
Btw, this is how I translated it in today's chapter of Kaiju No. 8. There are a billion alternatives, but please, I beg of you with Sarah Mclachlan playing the background, don't use "it's my win."
Hoshina's sixth technique might join the ranks of the Reacoome Ultra Fighting Miracle Bomber and Juda's Nanto Kokaku-ken Kesshoshi in the pantheon of "attacks we may never see in the manga itself" lol.
