Super Smartphone: hounin 放任 (or 自由放任 jiyuu-hounin) is being "hands-off" or "laissez-faire." Moura, not being so bright, mistakes it for 豊満 (houman=fat/obese.) Good thing the French language comes in clutch, as always.
Btw, this is how I translated it in today's chapter of Kaiju No. 8. There are a billion alternatives, but please, I beg of you with Sarah Mclachlan playing the background, don't use "it's my win."
#3【Shen Xiang】The martial arts master and user of Untruth. The name "shen" was always assumed to be from 真 (true) but his full name seems to be derived from 真相 (zhēnxiàng) or "truth." ("Seems" bc with romanization from Japanese of Chinese, your results may vary.)
Working on Chapter 98 reminded me how far a series like Undead Unluck has come. I had to pull quotes from the first chapter and, damn, working on a wild series this long is surreal. I'm no one important, but I can't thank the worldwide reader base enough. You guys are sick.
#4【Void Volks】The heavyweight boxing champion and user of Unavoidable. "Void" is from "Unavoidable," but "Volks" is rendered ボルクス(borukusu) which is a character away from ボックス(bokkusu/box) referencing his boxing background.
When keigo is introduced, you have to get creative. It's sometimes not a matter of having contractions or not, but language itself. Here, Corleo tells Minerva わかった (wakatta/alright/okay/I get it) and she says 敬語を使えよお前 (use keigo/respectful speech, you.)
Less of an informative corner and more of a simple anecdote from when I was first working on Undead Unluck. Anyone who has TL'd dialogue can relate, but the more nebulous words end up being harder because there are SO many choices. Editors really help mitigate the struggle! 👍👍
A practical example from MamaYuyu Ch 21: Even though you can't see the chars, each voice is easily identifiable in JP bc of their distinct tics or tones. Elysia calls Corleo "Corleo-kun" in Japanese. Monika speaks with the ending "na/noyo" and uses "kuso" as an adjective a lot.🧵 https://t.co/dJgvr9wfMt
#6 【Juiz】The Negator of Unjustice. Her name relates to the word "Justice," but "Juiz" also means "judge" in Portuguese. I went with that spelling because that had the strongest connotations to "justice" among any other choices. (Except perhaps "Juice," lol.)
I brought this up bc Shueisha gives Viz these photoblue scans that are basically unusable unless I correct them manually but they'll still have the watermark anyway. You can see an example here from the Naruto interview which I still highly recommend you all read! https://t.co/EBRGc1oenv
Been sidelined with the vaccine woes, but I hope you're all enjoying Undead Ch 226! Read it on the SJ app or site and enjoy!
