Since we tend not to use honorifics in SJ manga, it's hard to tell who is talking to Corleo when they refer to him by name. So, in panel 4, I add the "Monika" after "I'm here." even though he doesn't say her name originally. (It's just "I'm here. Everything's fine.")
A practical example from MamaYuyu Ch 21: Even though you can't see the chars, each voice is easily identifiable in JP bc of their distinct tics or tones. Elysia calls Corleo "Corleo-kun" in Japanese. Monika speaks with the ending "na/noyo" and uses "kuso" as an adjective a lot.🧵 https://t.co/dJgvr9wfMt
Oh yeah, ofc I picked "anal orbs" for the shirikodama bc it sounded funnier, but I still wanted the JP word somewhere to correlate it with its folklore context, so I moved it to Kuin's balloon despite the word not being present here originally. https://t.co/As8MPwVttd
i pretty much translated this straight lol. The only thing was that I massaged Kuin's reaction to make it sound a bit more like a natural reaction in English. (Realization: "Scratch that." Extrapolation: "He's scary in a different way.") Reaction quips often need this esp comedy.
A play on the words words 憤り (ikidooru/indignation/anger) and 滞り (todokoori/stagnation.) I think the translation came out fine.
The Kappa is said to have mind control powers that radiate from the plate on its head. Kumamoto and Oita are two places in Japan with a lot of kappa lore. In Yatsushiro (a city in Kumamoto) they say that was where the kappa first arrived from the sea and into the Kuma River.
Not to say there's not goofy stuff. Here the kappa says he's pulled out their anal orbs or "shirikodama." The shirikodama is an orb that rests in your anus that kappas suck out if they drag you in the river. This lore comes from distended anuses found on drowning victims. Neato!
i've been laughing at this panel for a whole goddamn week. read Yokai Buster Murakami #妖怪バスター村上
Undead Unluck Chapter 210: あらかせぎ means "making a wild amount of money/killing" but this is actually a throwback to Tozuka-sensei's one-shot 超重課金バンガード (Super Heavy Bank Charge Banguard/Vanguard) as that was the name of the town of MC 兼無欽太郎 (Kintaro Kanenashi.)
Undead Unluck 208 - Fuuko asks for help by saying たすけておくんなまし (tasuketeokunnamashi) おくんなまし (okunnamashi) is based off of おくれなさいませ and older and codified version of してください (shitekudasai/please do~) hence the more "formal" way she asks in English.
doing extra work on Destroy All Humans. They Can't Be Regenerated. gets me so stoked to see it released. I love it when a series is tailor-made for my niche weird talents.
@MarzGurl and here's a fun tidbit
