For this scene, Hoshina uses オモロい which is a Kansai-ben way of saying 面白い (interesting) so instead of making it "interestin'" I shape the language around the word. "We've got" instead of "we have," "folks" instead of just "people." Respectable, but somewhat relaxed (4/6)

I don't wanna make this thread too long, but all in all, it's always a balancing act of readability and faithfulness. With accents, going "full yee-haw" can work for some characters, of course, but a more nuanced approach I feel always works better. (6/6)

It's also probably uncommon, but I also tag all my SFX with a description that details: 1. What it is. 2. Its context in the panel. Leads to me leaving some funny notes for my editors lol.

As an aside, the reason I went for this word choice was because the Kaijuman will say things in katakana with a sort of "unfamiliarity" or "brokenness," so by having him say a stiffer phrase for "通信" (tsuushin) I hoped to emulate that. 怪獣8号の翻訳作業の裏話だけど、ここの台詞に対してのワードチョイスを考える際、人型怪獣のカタカナ語を多く使った独自の喋り方を何とか英語でも表現したいと思いましたので「通信」を長くradio communicationと表記しその違和感とか馴染みのなさも読者に伝わってくるじゃないかという風に考えていた

@brandonbovia こういう台詞は英語にすれば長く読みづらくなり吹き出しにさえ入らないため吹き出しのスペースを考えつつ英訳するのが必要不可欠。何も考えずにストレートに翻訳すれば編集者さんにもレタラーさんにも余計な訂正で困らせてしてしまうのでそれを避けたいのは漫画翻訳者としての仕事の一つです #怪獣8号

For this panel in Undead Unluck Ch 32, I must have spent at least an hour trying to get these splits right. I also made sure that "influential" was the biggest word here, which can sit on its own line. The only word that needs a hyphen is "self-worth" which it has by default.
